About Teach School History

Charles E. Teach School is an open enrollment, public elementary school that offers an accelerated learning environment for 4th-6th grade students in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Read more about Teach School at its website here.

Teach School was originally simply known as the Alternative School Program and opened in September of 1981 with 122 students and 4 teachers.  The program was contained on the campus of Pacheco Elementary School, which was a K-6 neighborhood school at the time.  In its early years, the program was moved from site to site until it found a home at the campus of Charles E. Teach Elementary School (formerly a neighborhood elementary school).  The program adopted the name of the campus, and took it along when it was moved to the campus of Bishop's Peak Elementary in 2001.  The program was then moved in 2014 to its current location at 145 Grand Avenue in San Luis Obispo.

Teach School has a long history of excellence.  Charles E. Teach Elementary was named a California Distinguished School in 2010, 2014, and again in 2018 and a National Blue Ribbon School in 2012.
